The Shelly Dimmer Gen3 is the upgraded third-generation version of the original Shelly Dimmer 2 smart module. Like its predecessor, it can switch lights on and off and adjust their brightness. It lets you easily set the lighting level in your rooms based on the time of day, your current activity (watching TV, reading, dining, socializing), or even your mood.
You can control your lighting not only through the internet but also via scheduled automations — whether it's a one-time schedule or a recurring event, even based on sunrise or sunset times. The dimmer also supports smooth fade-in and fade-out transitions when turning lights on or off.
As with other Shelly relays, its ultra-compact size allows it to be installed behind standard wall switches or inside electrical junction boxes. The Shelly Dimmer Gen3 supports a wide range of load types, including:
- Incandescent and halogen bulbs up to 200 W
- Dimmable LED lamps up to 150 W
- Low-voltage halogens with iron-core transformers up to 200 VA
- Dimmable electronic transformers up to 200 W
Like all Shelly devices, it connects directly to your Wi-Fi router—no hub or gateway required. You can use it as a standalone device for controlling one or two circuits (e.g., lighting or sockets) or as part of a full smart home system, perfect for new builds or renovations.
Thanks to its compact size, it can be installed behind existing wall switches or sockets for remote control and smart energy metering of connected lights or appliances. It’s also often used behind wall-mounted roller shutter switches or in shutter junction boxes, as its shutter control mode is among the most advanced on the market.
By installing the Shelly Dimmer Gen3 behind your current switches, you retain full functionality of your existing wall switches while adding smart remote control, dimming, and energy monitoring capabilities — making it ideal for retrofitting smart functionality into older homes.
Like other compact Shelly relays, it includes physical switch inputs, allowing you to control lights or appliances manually, while also enabling full remote operation via Wi-Fi. You can also create timed automations and disable the physical switch through the app (useful in children’s rooms). It works with both toggle and momentary switches and supports two-way and multi-way switch wiring.
The device also features an auto-off function and can be configured for impulse-switching mode.
Key features
- Supports both leading-edge and trailing-edge dimming
- Operates with or without a neutral wire (neutral recommended for best stability)
- Max load: 200 W (with neutral)
- Protections: over-temperature, over-voltage, over-load
- Compact size: 42 × 36 × 14 mm – fits behind most standard switches
- Local control via wall switch, app, or automation
- Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz (802.11 b/g/n)
- Bluetooth for fast pairing
- Supported protocols: MQTT, CoAP, WebSocket
- No cloud required – full local LAN control possible
Note: The Shelly Dimmer Gen3 switches and dims the AC voltage supplied to its input (110–240 V AC). It is not suitable for dry contact (voltage-free) switching.
Also, the line input and the switched line(s) must be on the same phase — multi-phase configurations are not supported.
Bluetooth pairing
Shelly Dimmer Gen3 requires the new Shelly Smart Control app for setup and is not compatible with the legacy Shelly Cloud app. Pairing is ultra-fast thanks to the built-in Bluetooth chip.
Hardware upgrades
Instead of the ESP32 chip used in previous models, the GEN3 line is powered by Shelly's own ESP-Shelly-C3 processor — offering a faster CPU and double the memory (8 MB), enabling enhanced features and significantly improved performance compared to the Shelly Plus series.
Advanced protections
Shelly Dimmer Gen3 is equipped with protection against overheating, overvoltage, and overload, ensuring safe operation even when installed in tight in-wall spaces.
Shelly Plus Gen3 features
- Supports HTTP/HTTPS webhooks for easy integration with compatible systems
- Built-in sunrise/sunset scheduling with up to ±23 hours offset
- Handles up to 20 offline-capable schedules stored locally on the device
- Full support for mjS scripting, allowing users to create custom logic and functionalities based on triggers like input/output states, sensor data, or network requests
- Supports Virtual Components, enabling state manipulation via HTTP commands from external systems
- Acts as a Bluetooth gateway, enabling communication with Shelly BLU sensors and remotes, even in isolated local setups (no cloud or internet needed)
Scheduling options
- Set individual on/off schedules for each day of the week
- Automate based on sunrise/sunset times, including flexible offsets (e.g., "sunset + 5 hours")
- Supports auto-on and auto-off timers for temporary switching states (e.g., turn off 5 minutes after activation)
Supported operation modes
- Cloud mode: Connects to the free Shelly Cloud, controllable via the iOS/Android app or my.shelly.cloud
- LAN mode: Local-only control within your private network
- Wi-Fi Access Point mode: Use the device's own Wi-Fi network to control it directly — ideal for locations without permanent internet access
Energy consumption data is saved to your Shelly Cloud account in cloud mode, and historical stats can be viewed or exported from the app.
Smart automation & local control
Shelly devices can control each other through Shelly Cloud Scenes, even across unrelated circuits or rooms. In LAN mode, devices can communicate directly via Direct Device-to-Device (DDD) control using fixed IPs and HTTP commands — perfect for offline operation or firewalled environments.
